Developing high profitable markets for Tanzanian smallholders and cooperatives – how can this be achieved?
The national umbrella organisation for organic farming in Tanzania TOAM is committed to climate-friendly, environmentally friendly and economically viable agriculture. It offers small farmers and cooperatives training and support in marketing their products. In order to make its own organisational processes even more effective and to get to know and satisfy the needs of its members better, and thus to win new, paying members, TOAM is to be supported in organisational development. With a strong partner at their side, the existence of many small farmers can be better secured.
Knowledge as a basis for sustainable success
The agricultural sector provides the livelihood for around 80 % of the Tanzanian population. A climate-friendly and sustainable agriculture, which also achieves high productivity, secures food supply for the population and the living of small farmers, cooperatives and traders. bbw supports the organic farmers' movement TOAM in organisational development and trains its staff in organic certification, the further development of cooperatives, internal knowledge transfer and sustainable services. By being strengthened as an organisation, TOAM is enabled to provide its members with a better and expanded range of services and to create and secure sustainable income for itself in the long run. The current project also serves as a stocktaking and thus as a basis for a planned BMO or VET partnership project starting in 2021.
Trainings in Corona times
By deploying national and international experts, bbw provides training on various topics, such as networking with local actors, internal knowledge transfer, further development of cooperatives, systematic needs assessment among members, organic certification, organic bee and chicken husbandry, conducting online trainings, etc. Due to the Corona pandemic, this year's missions with international experts are exclusively virtual. However, training sessions by local trainers and experts can be carried out as face-to-face events.
