Strengthening organic farming associations

Strengthening organic farming associations

How to achieve an opening up of local and international markets for organic products.

The project starts directly with the core problems: consultation, training and support in marketing for the associations and their members. The competitiveness of growers and processors of organic products in Egypt will thus be improved and organic agriculture, as a whole, supported.

Strengthening of selected organic farming associations

Organic farming in Egypt is in crisis. The national organic inspection bodies have been withdrawn due to shortcomings in quality. Environmental pollution impairs the quality of irrigation water, and the use of pesticides and fertilizers from conventional agriculture contribute to the problem. The international importers of Egyptian organic products are unsettled by this, and some send their own inspectors, which is more expensive. In order to conserve resources and maintain a market that generates employment, consultation and training are particularly important.

Exchange of knowledge helps to overcome problems

bbw sends experts from organic farming, organisational development and marketing of organic products. The production of food depends on soil protection, water quality and closed cycle management in order to maintain soil fertility. In addition to modern organic farming methods that comply with the EU Organic Farming Regulation, the quality for the Egyptian market and export is ensured through the promotion of competent inspection bodies. bbw is also involved in the inspection of organic farms in Germany. One third of the Egyptian population (approx. 20 million) works directly in agriculture. Agriculture is the third largest production sector of the Egyptian economy, which is also constantly growing. Organic products generate about twice as much revenue as conventional products. The additional revenue clearly compensates for the reduced yield. Organic farms in Egypt earn better than conventional ones.
